Five on Five – October 2106

On the fifth day of each month a group of photographers shares their favorite photos from the previous month. It’s a blog circle! Make sure to follow the link over to Adriana’s October post when you are done here. I still can’t believe we have been doing this for four years. These woman keep me shooting and posting regularly and it’s a treat to see what each of them were up to every month.  I attended Click Away 2016 in Seattle last month and was inspired to start picking up the camera for me again. I realized I had almost stopped taking images of the kids unless it was with my cell phone (no shame, there is a cell phone image in here or two) I realized I wasn’t practicing and that’s no good at all. The kids have been amazing this month in humoring my requests and allowing me to stick the lens in their faces regularly. As a result, I have gotten a few portraits that I am absolutely in love with.

It’s felt really wonderful to give myself permission to have the camera in  my hand for me again. And I truly believe that the more I pick up the camera for me, the better I will be for my clients. And that’s a win-win all around!

Now head on over to Adriana’s blog and see what October looked like for her.

September’s 5 Favorites!

On the fifth day of each month a group of photographers shares their favorite photos from the previous month. It’s a blog circle! In this post I will be a link to the next person at the end of the post. Read on and enjoy our favorites from September.

Nothing like sliding in at the last moment with a post. October has been a whirlwind and we are only 5 days deep! Let’s slow things down a little bit by re-living what my five favorite images were from last month…

SEPTEMBER 2016-

These two started school on their birthdays (one on the 6th – who turned 8, and one on the 8th who turned 6) –

And this Pioneer Square engagement session was so much fun. The one month countdown is ON for Lydia and Aaron as of today (I’ll be posting their full engagement session early next week so stay tuned)!

And a bonus shot, that wasn’t taken by me, but one I am SO proud of. My son took this image while at the zoo with his grandma. I couldn’t love this shot more!

August’s Five – Vanessa Simpson

This is a re-occurring post that I share on the fifth of each month. It’s a chance for me  share  my five favorite images – personal work, client work, or anywhere in between.

This post is a part of a larger group project that I participate in with several other talented female photographers. When you are done here, please click on over to Adriana’s blog to see what she was up to this August.

Here’s to an amazing September!!

July’s Five on Five

I’ve missed a few months… wow, has it really been since April? I left Facebook rather abruptly a few months ago (I can not take all the political nonsense and the general NOISE over there anymore), and didn’t really think about how I would be leaving behind the thread of reminders for this monthly post as well. My sweet photo tribe reached out and asked if I still wanted to play, and that they would even send me a text message reminder to join in the fun. I really can’t say enough about the humans I have found out here on the internet. Yes, I am over some of the social media chaos, but man, I have made some amazing friendships over the years via this screen and keyboard. Thank you ladies, for understanding and keeping me in the loop of it all!

I thought I might play a little catch up for the months I have missed AND do it all with my favorite instant photos that i shot using my new Instax Mini camera.

May’s favorite, taken on Mother’s Day. I asked for a ferry ride and a visit to Vashon Island for the day. It was such a nice way to explore. I share a few more of these instant images over on the ViewFinders.

Now, on to July!! This moment at the Frostee with all the cousins over the Fourth of July weekend.

And finally, one more from my growing pile of instant images – this building that was across the way from the hotel we stayed at in San Diego. I couldn’t get enough of the patterns and that YELLOW!20160709-summer16003-2-4

Here’s to an awesome month! Now head to Smallroots and have a look at what she’s been up to.

April’s Five on Five

April- full of adventure, family, play time, friendships. You were exhausting and beautiful and re-affirming in so many ways.  I really do love these five on five posts where I get to relook and recap all the adventures I had with my camera. Make sure to click on through after you see what I was up to and check out the other woman in the blog circle, starting with Adriana at Smallroots.20160401-IMG_8456

Into the Light – March’s 5 on 5

I am not sure what it was about March, but it kicked my butt. I was drained. Maybe it was the day after day of dark and grey skies or the fact that my entire house had been fighting off the sickies. Maybe it was just the cracking open of one season into another or the two eclipses that we experienced during the month.
Whatever it was, March felt like a literal march. But then the sun started to shine again, the blues sky staying out longer and longer. The shifting of an hour on our clocks and then bursting open of flowers everywhere. Things began to feel so much lighter and more free. And now, here we are in April. As I look back at last month, I realized how much beauty was happening despite the depletion. And to prove it, here are my five favorite images from March. When you are finished here, click on over to Adriana’s blog and see what her month looked like.

February 2016 – 5 on 5

On the fifth of every month a group of photographers will each post five favorite photos from the previous month. It’s a “blog circle” aka virtual gallery hop that will take you around to not only different corners of the interwebs, but the country. We all live in different places and have different styles and loves of subject mater and photography, but the what we share is inspiration and moments from our everyday and our professional photography. At the end of each Fave 5 on 5 post there will be a link to the next photographer. Be sure to click on the link and hop over to the next gallery. Enjoy!

I have a back log of client posts to share and a few personal projects I need to get up here too. I spent two back to back weekends in Portland, Oregon with family and friends, but those DSLR images will have to wait for another post because I am in the middle of a computer upgrade (YEAH!) that involves migrating 5+ years of work (UGGG!). All photos I am sharing today were taken using my iPhone 6 – I am rarely without my phone and so, a lot of my life is captured with it.

These five on five posts give you all a small glimpse into my day to day life- something that can be a little intimidating when running a business. What I really hope though is that it makes you stop and say, “Hey that gal looks like fun and she takes a damn good photo too. Let’s hire HER to capture our wedding day, our family photos, our small business”.

And so, I bring you my super silly and wonderfully full January, 2016.

UntitledA weekend away with some of my childhood girlfriends. I call this one, The Reunion Tour.
UntitledI have been listening to Josh Ritter for so long and to finally see him live and sing along with him (and that smile, yup). It was such a GREAT night!
UntitledThese people. My family. My loves. My life. This was such a sweet afternoon spent at a favorite spot in town (actually one of the first places we ever went out to eat at in Tacoma).
UntitledI started the new year off with a daily yoga practice. I loved that the kids wanted to join me as we followed along with the youtube videos. And that southern exposure light we get in the living room, yes please.
UntitledBlue hour commute. It was after 7am, but with the rain and the shorter days, it was still so very dark out on this particular morning.
Please don’t forget that these monthly posts are part of a blog ring. Make sure to hop on over to Adriana’s blog to see what she was up to last month.

Keep chasing that light, Vanessa

December 2015 – Five on Five

My final Five on Five post for 2015. As the other women and I discussed this month, we realized we have been doing this monthly review for the past four years! WOW. Time sure does go quickly. I do love taking a step back from my month and picking through the images and memories. When you are done here, make sure you jump over to Small Roots and see what she was up to in December.

Hot chocolate and snacks to warm up once we were done. The snow was perfect. FocusInPhotography (35 of 72)Finding the color. If you want to see more of these, I wrote a blog post on ViewFinders all about it.

FocusInPhotography (4 of 72)Singing. My boy is in there signing his little hear out with his classmates. This was at our town’s tree lighting festivities. O is our cheermiester and LOVES the holiday season. He is the first to pull out his Santa hat and the last to tuck away his stocking when it’s all over. FocusInPhotography (13 of 72) Fifi decorating our tree. Such care and fun as she pulled each one from the box this year. We managed to only break one or two this go around- I loved watching her drag the step stool around so she could reach all the branches.

I hope you all had a lovely December- Here’s to another amazing year!!
